THE MOUNTAIN SHEEP

I envy sheep, in the summer.

Their ownership of mountains,

their mastery of high ledges

over dizzying drops,

their freedom to roam.

I'd love to wake

to the stunning scenery that they do,

to see sunsets from summits every night,

with the twinkling lights

of town, far below.

I'd love to not have to come down

from the trails before dark

in case I fall, and have to call for rescue,

I hanker after the lack

of responsibility, of sheep.

But then again,

I'm a fair weather hiker,

I only go when the forecast says

sunny and clear,

so I can appreciate the view.

I'd never be able to hack

the long dreary days of winter that they do,

standing sheltered by a bush

as the rain blows past,

in almost solid sheets.

I'd go a bit stir crazy

with the cold and the wind,

the soggy wet ground a constant,

the low cloud obscuring the view,

for months at a time.

Maybe, I wouldn't like to be a sheep,

after all.
