WHITE HORSES

gallop

like pearls

scattered

on the crest of waves,

spilling pieces of themselves

as they go.

Legs flash

and manes curl,

hooves rise in the air

and crash down

in time

to the heartbeat

of the moon.

And all the white horses

scatter,

and separate,

diminish in size and fury

and beauty,

as the shoreline

approaches

and all we see

are the ghosts

remaining,

of beautiful beasts,

that lived for a second

and died

in the ocean’s foam.
