THORNY ROSE

I had a friend called Rose,

she couldn’t bear to bear her soul,

she hid from life, and love she scorned,

she armed herself with piercing thorns.

Once, she had a true, true love,

alas, his love was not so true,

he ran away with someone else

and Rose was left behind, bereft.

Well, on she went, but having spent,

some time in broken-hearted hell,

she then devised a desperate plan

to save herself from future pain.

Like porcupines, she donned her spines,

her tongue she armed with prickly barbs,

to use on anyone who might

be brave enough to try their charms.

But thorns can grow both in and out

and Rose was hurt by fear and doubt,

as time went by and none she trusted,

her heart became unused and rusted.

Once is bitten, twice is shy,

but as Rose decided not to try,

the thorns they grew and pinned her tight,

a victim of her own defensive fight.
